Submissions, Freeware, and Odd Notes

Some Thoughts About Submissions

Some of the time here at the Big M, we get submissions. They truly run the gamut of the gaming community- beginners, middle of the roaders, almost professional level, and pro caliber. Most of the interested parties usually fall into the first two, but lately you would be suprised how many of the submissions we get that are in the last two categories.

I know one thing from receiving ideas from all over the world, (Internet is a wonderful thing isn't it?) is most people that apply or show their games to other potential employers fall short in one major way. They don't do the research of the companies they are approaching. If a company has a game or two already in their repertoire, you would be better served to offer something they DON'T have.

If they make all sports games, then offering a non-sports game probably won't be a good fit for them. If they are a newer company, then maybe they are looking at all proposals. I had a gentleman from another country approach me with some friends about making a game, and the idea had merit, but his presentation and the group that accompanied him, just wasn't ready to make a game as they really didn't know what they wanted to do and the game proposal and the group dialogue showed it.

Our guys explained about what was expected and what they should be prepared to give in a meeting with prospective employers. I can happily say that the leader of the group took the talk to heart and came up with probably the most professional game proposal I have seen in the years I have been involved in this business. I hope he finds the right person to make his wonderful game!

He knows who he is, and he should be very proud of his progress and his professionalism. Kudos!

Freeware

I am a huge fan of freeware games, and I have had a few on my PC that I can't get enough of. I will be glad to speak of which in another column, or you can visit http://dubiousquality.blogspot.com/ for his views of what is promising out there. In fact his latest columns talks about the new NCAA 2K6 and Madden 2K6. Not all is rosy in EA with their version of Napoleonic behavior. I recommend you spend some time at Dubious Quality and read, he has a great weblog and entertains as well as informs.

I make it a daily pitstop.

So what about this freeware explosion? I was thinking the other day and thought why can't Medley Games be able to offer a well deserving freeware game if the product is professional and FUN enough?

Why can't we offer a place for maybe one or two games that people can visit and give feedback and help out a freeware designer with making his game that much better? Maybe we could offer a section in the forums for them to post news and information about their game and it's progress!

Doesn't seem like a bad idea, and we are actively looking into this.

We can't be a HQ for all freeware proposals and games, but we can really take a look at adding one or two great projects and allowing them the chance to give and get feedback about their latest ideas! Feedback is a great and wonderful thing, and you need the fans input as well as they need your ideas and thoughts to make the process a healthy one!

So if you have a great idea/proposal for a game, or have a game you would love us to consider for something like this, please feel free to email us at: tcdale at medleygames.com and put in the header game idea/proposal.

OdD NoT3s

Some thoughts about the future! We now have 3 artists that are going to give the game interface a whirl and we should have some news on that front hopefully by the end of the month. One guy is doing a grand job from Europe, and he is a busy guy, but we appreciate the time he can give us. We also have two from the States that are starting proposals and Medley Games should be posting more information about it soon.

We now can safely say that multiplayer can handle up to 50 contestants in a league and the race engine is progressing well. If I can just get the 49 car to get off the inside border and bang a few cars, I would be happy!

So what would you like to see the BIG M do? What is your fervent wish? Let us know at- http://www.medleygames.com/board/index.php

Our website is always a WIP, so if you find a few things not done, it isn't because we are lazy, we just have our other jobs and we are banging away on the important stuff, and some of the things that are left to be done are either on the list to be done before release, or we are in the process of learning it ourselves. :)

Remember what medley in the dictionary stands for: a diverse assortment or mixture; especially : a musical composition made up of a series of songs or short pieces. Consider us a amalgamation of the two. An uniting, if you wish. We all have our interests and likes/dislikes, and we all have duties among all the other things we are doing.

You have an affinity for websites, and doing work behind the scenes? Feel free to offer help!

We would be glad to hear your ideas for making our whole presence better! If you can offer some insight or information that could help us reduce the "Wish List" a little, make sure to email me. I will be glad to talk!
