Ok now what is a sports sim? And what is SCR?

Seems I get this response to my previous entry in the MGDB (Medley Games Dev Blog), so I will try to explain a little more about SCR and the genre it belongs in!

If you are new to sports simulation games, but not to stock car racing, then maybe a little info is needed. Say you are a big sports fan, but you get tired of the button pushing console games that leave your destiny to how well you time and push levers and buttons on your favorite sports game on PS2, XBox, or GameCube. What is your options?

Few?

Not hardly.

If you have a PC , there are games that are not based on your knowledge of the rosters of each professional team, so all you have to do is use an editor and voila! the guy is on your team. They are what the genre calls sports sim games, or text sports sim games.

Before you go running off, let me inform you that if you find that the latest sports game gets mundane and boring, you might give the genre a try.

Games like Sports Interactive's Football Manager 2005 and NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2005 ,OOTP Developments' Out of The Park Baseball 6 and Title Bout Championship Boxing, Solecismic Software's classic Front Office Football 2004.

Also you need to check out:

Grey Dog Software's Total Pro Basketball 2005 by Gary Gorski, along with Adam Ryland's Total Extreme Wrestling 2005 which for a new company have made a great start; Shaun Sullivan's PureSim Baseball, Baseball Mogul 2005, along with .400 Software Studios' Total Pro Football and Tournament Dreams College Basketball by Arlie Rahn, and FaceOff Hockey by Rick Cole and Jim Renshaw, and Brian Nichol's Fast Break Basketball and Fast Break College Basketball. (Links will be at the end of the post..)

There are a lot of games out there that you can test your management skills against than just an console AI that has only limited memory.

These games are for the masterminds, the thinkers, the people that want to prove that someone can manage those pesky Cubs to a World Series, or take lowly Gonzaga to the national college basketball championship? What about taking lowly Preston North End to the Premier Division in football? It can happen!

So what you say? Well let's start like this.

Ever get tired of seeing your favorite team lose time and again to teams they should beat? Well these games are what you are looking for. They allow you to take your favorite teams and match your knowledge of the sport and see how you would do with that team that JUST misses.

Baseball? Football? (both American and worldwide.. hehe) Basketball? Boxing? Hockey? Yep they all have some representation, and you can delve into each world creating that special matchup or historical game!

The only limitation is your imagination. You can create whole worlds where the Negro Leagues were never seperate, where Hockey never had a interruption, and the Pro Basketball Leagues never had holdouts.

And that is where we come to SCR.

You believe that someone like Jeff Gordon is overrated, or that Kasey Kahne is underappreciated? You believe Mark Martin doesn't get the kudos he deserves? Ever want to match your wits and talents against the Hendricks and Evernhams, and Ganassi, Childress, and Roush's of the world?

Think you can run a better Stock Car team? Believe you can win Daytona? Win the Cup? Survive the Chase? Well now you get to prove it with SCR- Stock Car Championship Racing the game.

What about that driver tearing it up in the Truck or Lower divisions? Is he ready for the big time? Should you replace pit crew members? Maybe entice a driver to join you during "Silly Season?"

That is just some of the things you can be deciding on with SCR. You can also have a "Cup Season" of your own with other like minded fans and race against your friends for the season title!

For those motor sports fans out there, we will be bringing you a chance to make your motor sports dreams come true!

Thanks for stopping by!

Just a few things to talk about...

Wow, thanks for the response so far, and I hope you can stay tuned! Things progress well, and I will give you a quick once-over about how things are going. We are moving to a point where if things continue as they are now, we can see something before the next season starts for Stock Car racing fans. If they progress better than expected, less than six months.

Did I say less than a year OR six months? Yes, I did. I believe that the only thing that will hinder us right now is the lack of applicants. Graphic artists are probably the most toughest thing to find when you start something like this, and most are either on one side of the spectrum or another. Either they are super talented, and we can't afford them, or their talent is not as good as the applicant thinks, and we have to say no.

Any interested applicants can apply at: tcdale@medleygames.com . I will be glad to talk to them about particulars.

That being said, we are working on the 2d/3d for the game, and when we have some finished screens we will be posting them, but I will try to add some early test screens we were playing with.

This is a shot of an early 3d car that you will be able to "skin" the way you want for the game... third party mods are important to a player, and being able to color your car and place the number on it, along with your sponsor's logos will be something that SCR fans can look forward to.

You have to remember that most of the screens you are going to see are very early test screens and the final alpha/beta screens probably will look a lot different than what you are seeing now.

You will be able to view the car from the back, front, and side views all in 3D to give you the ultimate in "coloring" the car the way you want!

The next screen to the left here is a early shot of Victory Lane, and you will have your vehicle, skinned to your specs, at the center with planned images of the driver, along with the pit crew, princess and sponsors,etc... in the background.

The car isn't finished yet, but the background needs a little more tweaking, but overall I am happy with the look of it so far. As usual, your mileage may vary in the full version.

The last two screens are courtesy of our man Joe Bryan, better known as the statfreak! He has worked long and hard on the graphics, and wait till you see the HTML graphics he has made, that will be even better!

For now, those are the two new screens, along with some information you haven't had previously. I will be posting more as soon as I can, and some news about what else you can expect from SCR the game!
